Celebrating Triad Traditions: Cultural Events to Connect With This Fall
Autumn brings abundant opportunities to celebrate the diverse cultural fabric of the Triad through festivals, bazaars, and gatherings. As the weather cools, let these lively events warm your spirit and promote connection.

Uplifting Hispanic Heritage
Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15th through October 15th, celebrates the
contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans to the fabric of our society. Kick off the festivities by partaking in El Grito events that commemorate independence across Latin America. Local celebrations like Greensboro’s Fiesta and Winston-Salem’s Piedmont Latin Festival feature Hispanic food, artisans, entertainment and more.
Greensboro resident Carla S says, “I look forward to Hispanic Heritage Month each year because it highlights our diverse cultures, our resilience as a community, and brings people together to learn, celebrate, and understand one another better.

Honoring Native Roots
October provides a special opportunity to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and reflect on the culture of our region’s first inhabitants. Local Native American advocacy organizations will host events focused on education, from community talking circles to speaker panels examining indigenous history. The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will perform traditional drumming and dances at their 39th Annual Powwow in October. Visitors can browse artwork, jewelry and food while immersed in indigenous music, costume and community.

Illuminating Diwali
As autumn peaks in late October, Indian families across the Triad prepare to celebrate Diwali or the “Festival of Lights.” Often referred to as the Indian New Year, this 5-day holiday represents the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and hope for the future.
Local temples throughout the Triad host huge Diwali Mela bazaars where visitors can honor the holiday through dance, henna, rangoli sand-art, and tantalizing Indian delicacies. The holiday culminates in dazzling fireworks and candle-lighting rituals.
This fall, seek out cultural gatherings that speak to you & spark your interest as we celebrate the mosaic of our community. While heritage months and festivals provide special opportunities to honor & learn new traditions, our chance to connect persists year-round.
