With over 30 years of fashion design experience under her belt, Debra Frederick has now wholeheartedly embraced her lifelong passion – painting. Though her career took her on a detour into the world of denim and apparel, Debra stayed creatively inspired by traveling internationally and soaking in the sights of iconic art along the way.

Now as a watercolor artist, she pulls from a wealth of stored images and cultures in her mind to create vibrant pieces that depict the universality of human happiness and joy. She finds inspiration from her global adventures, as well as from esteemed artists like Romare Bearden, Jerry Pickney and Martha Wakefield.

Though the medium has shifted from fabric to watercolor, Debra still employs masterful skill with color, design and composition. Her brightly-hued, emotionally evocative paintings aim to capture the black community living life and experiencing joy just as vividly as anyone else. As she continues evolving as an artist, she also makes it a priority to encourage young creative talent to embrace their passion.
